Prosecutors say Akron man sucker-punched former football player during murder by suspected gang member
AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County jury is deliberating in the 2013 fatal shooting of a former Ellet High School and Youngstown State University football player who prosecutors say saved his friend’s life during an armed robbery.
David Phillips, 22, is one of four people charged in the Aug. 29, 2013 death of Paris Wicks II, 23, at the Lover’s Lane Market in Akron.
Phillips faces complicity to murder, aggravated robbery and felonious assault charges. Two others are serving lengthy prison stints for their roles in the case. The suspected shooter, a then 15-year-old boy named Ramous Lewis, is scheduled for trial as an adult in November.
